How To Wash Microfiber Towels

Jul. 23, 2021

In recent months, we have learned a lot of new knowledge about cleaning. I mean, who knows the best way to wash towels after using them three times? What's more complicated is that if you use microfiber towels, cleaning them is not as simple as you think. It turns out that there is a special way to prevent damage to the towel and keep your towel in a good shape for a long time.

What is microfiber?

Microfiber is a synthetic fiber that is thinner than ordinary thread. Most microfiber towels are made of a mixture of polyester and nylon, and the diameter of the silk thread is less than 10 microns, even smaller than the silk thread. Microfibers are used to make bath towels and cleaning towels. They are great because they dry faster than cotton and other fabrics.

Although we like to use microfiber to dry the body after a hot bath, washing the microfiber towel in the wrong way can cause irreparable damage.

How to clean microfiber towels

Although it seems common sense to throw towels into the washing machine and dryer, if the microfiber is to be used for a long time, it needs special treatment.

When washing towels in a washing machine, choose the coldest mode! Washing at high temperatures will damage the towels. A high temperature will cause the microfiber towel to melt! When this material melts, the gap between the threads will close, and the towel will lose its ability to absorb moisture.

Worst of all, you may not even be able to tell if the towel has melted. The melted microfiber towel looks the same as a good towel. To test whether your microfiber towel has melted, try to clean a small piece of spilled water on a hard surface. The melted towel will push the water around instead of absorbing it.

When cleaning microfiber towels, another thing you should avoid is the use of fabric softeners. Using fabric softeners to restore the fluffy and soft texture may be a natural thing, but experts say it may do more harm than good.

Fabric softeners may block the small holes in the microfibers, and again, prevent the towel from absorbing moisture. If there is no air between the fibers, the towel will lose its ability to absorb water and dry properly. So, even though your towels may smell bad after use, avoid using fabric softeners.

Ideally, you should also wash the microfiber separately. Cleaning with other materials such as cotton will cause the fine lint to block the voids in the microfibers and cause damage. Microfiber will also attract fluff, so be sure to clean the fluff tray in the dryer beforehand.

Last but not least, the same law about heat also applies to drying. Do not dry the towel at high temperatures, or the towel will melt. Air drying your microfibers (microfibers tend to dry quickly!) can be said to be the best way to avoid heat damage, but if you can’t do it, put them in the dryer on a cool or very low heat setting.

That's it! Now you will never make the mistake of drying microfiber towels the wrong way.
